Aside from being the only marina in the world with two apostrophes, Cap'n Jack's Marina, located in the Downtown Disney Marketplace, is the best marina for guests interested in fishing expeditions. Walt Disney World has a long tradition of guided fishing tours stretching back to the World's debut in 1971. Readers may recall PFTP's post last year on the Ft. Wilderness Campground marina; extended staff recall fishing expeditions on Bay Lake back in 'the day'.
Now one of fifteen recognized marinas within the WDW resort, Cap'n Jack's Marina provides day and resort guests with a wide range of watercraft rentals, specialty cruises, and fishing expeditions. Watercraft rentals here will set you back anywhere from $30 to $45 dollars in various time increments and offer a fun view of the Downtown Disney and Saratoga Springs area. Specialty cruises, very popular around Crescent Lake and World Showcase Lagoon, are also offered and, once again, are especially useful for day guests to the resort.
Fishing expeditions, offered in conjunction with the B.A.S.S., are a bit more expensive. Included in your two-hour, $260 expedition, however, are all the essentials (gear, tackle, beverages, etc.) plus an expert guide who will take you to the best structure the lakes have to offer. It helps to note this is a catch and release system only - guests who are camping at Ft. Wilderness can't count on taking their catch home for a fish fry. Most disappointing, though, are the times at which guests can book a fishing tour: 7am; 10am; and 1:30pm. As such, evening fishing is out of the question unless you rent a canoe elsewhere in the resort, provide your own tackle, and finish before 7pm. (Just saying.) So, if you really want to catch fish, plan on booking a 7am boat.
One of the most wonderful and overlooked marina options are specialty cruises. Members of the PFTP staff booked a 10-person pontoon for an Illuminations! viewing in 2002 and will say it was one of the best things we've ever done in the parks. If interested in experiencing Illuminations!, we recommend booking early keeping in mind you will depart from the Yacht and/or Beach Club marina. If interested in a 'generic' specialty cruise, each marina offers this service and is a great way to celebrate a special group event.
